Eight weeks to Christmas. That is how long you have, and it is shorter than it sounds.
The last week of December is the most expensive and the most crowded stretch of the Rajasthan year. Heritage hotels, desert camps and large vehicles sell out first, and they sell out early. The people who enjoy that week are usually the ones who booked in October.
This post is a countdown. It lists the dates that matter, what sells out in what order, a week-by-week plan, and the winter details that surprise first-time visitors: fog, cold desert nights and two Fridays when the Taj Mahal is shut.

Quick Answer
Book hotels, camps and vehicles for 24 December to 3 January as early as possible, ideally now. Desert camps go first, then heritage hotels, then safari permits and large vehicles. Expect fog on early morning highways, very cold desert nights and peak prices. Remember that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, including 25 December and 1 January.
The Dates That Matter
The calendar this year is unusually specific, and it affects your plans.
| Date | Day | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 24 Dec | Thursday | Christmas Eve, travel starts to peak |
| 25 Dec | Friday | Christmas Day, long weekend, Taj Mahal closed |
| 26 to 30 Dec | Saturday to Wednesday | Busiest sightseeing days |
| 31 Dec | Thursday | New Year’s Eve, camps and hotels run special events |
| 1 Jan 2027 | Friday | New Year’s Day, Taj Mahal closed |
| 2 to 3 Jan | Saturday and Sunday | Return traffic, heavy on major highways |
Two long weekends in two weeks pull in both families and groups of friends. That is why this holiday season tends to start filling earlier than most.
What Sells Out First
Everything is limited, but not everything runs out at the same speed. Knowing the order helps you decide what to book first.
Desert camps go first, especially near Jaisalmer. A camp has a fixed number of tents, and New Year’s Eve programmes often need a two-night minimum.
Heritage hotels in Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Jaipur follow. Rooms with lake or fort views go before the standard ones.
Safari permits are next. Zone permits at wildlife parks are limited per day, and the better zones fill early.
Vehicles and drivers tighten last, but quickly. Large vehicles such as tempo travellers disappear before sedans, and decorated cars for weddings vanish early in the season.
Eight Weeks Out: Fix Your Dates and Your Route
Start with three decisions. How many nights, which cities, and how fast you want to move.
Be realistic. Holiday crowds slow every stop, and short winter days leave less time. A plan with fewer cities and more rest beats a long list.
If you are travelling for the first time, a balanced 5 nights 6 days Rajasthan tour covers Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar, Udaipur and Jodhpur, with drive times planned in. Book it early, since it depends on hotels in several cities at once.
Six Weeks Out: Book the Scarce Things
This is the moment to lock in desert camps, heritage hotels and large vehicles.
For a full circuit with the desert, a Rajasthan tour package 8 nights 9 days needs the most coordination, since it spans eight nights across many cities. Late booking leaves you with whatever rooms remain.
Ask for every confirmation in writing, with the room type, the dates and the cancellation terms. Peak-season policies are stricter than normal, and some properties do not refund at all.
The Desert on New Year’s Eve
A desert New Year is the dream of many visitors. A bonfire, folk music, a sky full of stars. It is also the most heavily booked experience of the season.
Camps often run special New Year programmes with a set price and a fixed menu. Some require a two-night stay, and some include a gala dinner. Read the inclusions carefully.
Winter nights in the desert can fall close to single digits. Ask about heating, blankets and bathrooms before you book. A proper Rajasthan desert safari bundles the camel ride, the camp stay and the dinner, which is easier than arranging each piece yourself.
Getting to the Far West
Jaisalmer is the longest common drive from Jaipur, around 560 to 575 km. Most travellers split it over two days, with a night in Jodhpur or Bikaner.
If you are travelling one way and flying out of another city, a one way Jaipur to Jaisalmer cab can save you the cost of a return leg. Ask whether the fare includes a return charge, and book early, since long-distance vehicles are the first to be committed.
If you are still choosing between the desert cities, our post on Jaisalmer versus Bikaner compares them side by side.
Four Weeks Out: Safaris and Special Days
Wildlife safaris are a popular holiday add-on. They are also tightly limited.
A Jaipur to Ranthambore tour with a night near the park fits the fixed safari slots. Book the permits first, then the hotel and the vehicle. Mornings are cold in an open vehicle, so pack gloves and a warm cap.
Tigers are never guaranteed. Go for the forest, the quiet and the chance, and treat a sighting as a bonus.
For the hill station option, our post on Jaipur to Mount Abu by road explains the climb and the timings. It is popular at New Year, so book early.
The Taj Mahal Problem
Here is a detail that catches many visitors. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
In 2026, Christmas Day, 25 December, falls on a Friday. So does New Year’s Day, 1 January 2027. If you plan to see the Taj on either of those dates, you will find it shut.
Plan the visit for another day. A Jaipur Agra 2 days tour with a night in Agra lets you pick the right day, and see the monument early without a pre-dawn drive. Always check the official listing for holiday changes.
Three Weeks Out: Flights and Arrival Plans
Flights fill up, and airports get busy. Fog adds delays, mostly from mid-December.
Avoid tight connections. Add a buffer before and after your trip, and share your flight number with your cab operator.
For the end of your holiday, a pre-booked Jaipur airport drop taxi removes the stress of finding a ride on a day when everyone seems to be heading to the airport. Leave earlier than you think you need to.
Fog and Cold: Winter Realities
December and January bring fog across North India. It is thickest in the early morning, between about 4 am and 9 am, and it is mostly a problem on routes to the north and east.
Leave long drives until after the fog lifts, usually mid-morning, and avoid night driving on highways. A tight early plan is the first thing fog breaks.
The cold is real, too. Mornings and nights are cold, and the desert is colder still. Pack layers, a warm cap, gloves and thick socks. Our post on the best time to visit Rajasthan shows how weather changes month by month.
Weddings Share the Same Weeks
Late December is also a popular wedding window. Baraats, receptions and family functions all use cars and drivers.
That draws vehicles away from tourist bookings, so a car you wanted may be unavailable for a reason that has nothing to do with Christmas.
If your family is hosting a wedding, a luxury wedding car rental for a December date needs booking weeks ahead. Do not assume one driver can handle both a wedding and a tourist trip.
Two Weeks Out: Confirm Everything
Send one message to every vendor. Confirm dates, times, names, vehicle number and driver details. Ask what happens if fog delays your arrival or a flight changes.
Keep screenshots of all confirmations. Peak-season bookings are the ones most likely to go wrong, and written records protect you.
Our Rajasthan road trip checklist lists what to confirm with the operator and what to check on the vehicle before you leave.
How Prices Behave
Prices rise in steps, not in a smooth line. Early December is moderate. Mid-December climbs. The last week jumps.
- Hotels often charge peak rates and add minimum-stay rules.
- Desert camps add special event pricing for New Year’s Eve.
- Cabs may cost more per day because availability is thin.
- Safari fees stay fixed, but nearby hotels rise.
- Last-minute deals mostly disappear.
Our listed vehicles come with 250 km of running per day, with toll and parking extra, and a driver night charge on overnight trips. Confirm current terms with any operator, and ask for the quote in writing with the vehicle model and every extra listed.
A Sample Six-Day Holiday Plan
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Jaipur, rest, light evening walk |
| 2 | Forts and old city, afternoon rest, early dinner |
| 3 | Drive toward the desert after the fog lifts, night halt |
| 4 | Arrive at the camp before sunset, dunes, music, stars |
| 5 | Slow morning, onward travel, evening rest |
| 6 | Departure with a generous airport buffer |
Notice what the plan leaves out. Long early drives, extra cities and back-to-back sightseeing. A holiday week rewards fewer stops, not more.
Travelling With Children and Elders
Holiday crowds and cold mornings are harder on the youngest and oldest travellers. Plan shorter drives, longer breaks and warm clothing for everyone.
Choose hotels with heaters, hot water and easy access. Avoid very early starts, and keep one flexible afternoon for rest. A calm plan is a better gift than a full one.
Common Mistakes
Booking late and hoping for deals. In peak week, they rarely appear.
Ignoring minimum-stay rules. Some properties require two or three nights on New Year’s Eve.
Planning the Taj on a Friday. It is closed on 25 December and 1 January.
Overloading the plan. Crowds make every stop slower.
Underestimating the cold. Desert nights catch many visitors off guard.
Choosing an Operator for Peak Week
In peak season, operators are stretched. The good ones stay organised and communicate. The weak ones overbook.
Look for a real office, verified drivers, clear pricing and recent reviews across several platforms. A dependable best cab company in Jaipur for holiday travel will confirm your booking in writing and explain what happens with fog delays and last-minute changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early should I book for Christmas and New Year in Rajasthan?
As early as possible, ideally 8 to 10 weeks ahead. Desert camps and heritage hotels sell out first, and large vehicles tighten close to the holiday.
Is the Taj Mahal open on Christmas Day 2026?
No. Christmas Day falls on a Friday, and the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. The same applies to New Year’s Day, 1 January 2027.
Are prices higher at Christmas and New Year?
Yes. Demand peaks, so hotels, camps and cabs charge higher rates. The last week of December is usually the most expensive.
Is it very cold in Rajasthan at Christmas?
Days are mild, but mornings and nights are cold, and desert nights can fall close to single digits. Pack layers, a cap, gloves and thick socks.
Does fog affect travel in December?
Yes, mostly from mid-December in the north and east. It slows early morning drives and delays flights, so leave after the fog lifts.
Is a desert camp on New Year’s Eve worth it?
Many travellers love it, but it is the most heavily booked experience of the season. Check inclusions, heating and minimum-stay rules before you pay.
