Jaipur to Jodhpur by Road: Hour by Hour Drive Plan for 2026

Jaipur to Jodhpur by Road

6:30 am. Your cab pulls out of Jaipur. By 8:45 you are crossing Ajmer. By noon you are past Pali. By 1:30 pm you are looking up at Mehrangarh Fort.

That is the shape of a good Jaipur to Jodhpur day. It is also the shape of a bad one, if you leave at 10 am, stop three times and arrive in the dark.

The road is easy. The timing is the part worth planning. This post walks the route hour by hour, shows where the time goes, and covers the stops, the fare factors and the choices that change the day.

Written by the Cabs Rajasthan Tour team in Jagatpura, Jaipur. Distances and times come from several public sources and differ a little by route and start point. Last checked October 2026. Confirm the plan with your driver for your date.

Quick Answer

Jaipur to Jodhpur by road is about 335 to 350 km. Plan 5 to 6.5 hours of driving, plus stops. The usual route runs through Ajmer, Beawar and Pali. Leave around 6:30 to 7 am to arrive by early afternoon, with time for lunch and a first look at the fort.

The Route in Four Legs

The road follows the main highway west from Jaipur. It is wide and well kept for most of the way.

Leg Approx. distance Approx. time What you pass
Jaipur to Ajmer About 135 km 2 to 2.5 hours Open highway, a few towns
Ajmer to Beawar About 45 km About 1 hour Aravalli hills
Beawar to Pali About 80 km 1.5 hours Flat country, small towns
Pali to Jodhpur About 70 km About 1 to 1.25 hours Approach to the city, more traffic

Together that gives about 335 to 340 km. Some sources show 350 to 366 km on a slightly different line, so expect a small difference between apps.

A Longer Alternative Through Nagaur

A second route runs north-west through Kuchaman and Nagaur. It is longer, around 380 km, and takes 7 to 7.5 hours.

It sees less traffic in places, but it is slower overall and has fewer services. Most drivers prefer the line through Ajmer, and so do we, unless roadworks change the picture on your date.

Do not argue about highway numbers. Ask your driver which road is clear that morning.

The Day, Hour by Hour

This plan assumes a 6:30 am departure and a drive of about six hours, with two stops. Change the times to suit your pickup.

Time Where What happens
6:30 am Jaipur Pickup, chai on the move
8:45 am Ajmer Breakfast or the dargah, 45 to 90 minutes
10:15 am Beawar Short tea stop, optional
11:30 am Pali Lunch at a busy dhaba, 40 minutes
12:45 pm Approaching Jodhpur City traffic builds
1:30 pm Jodhpur Hotel check-in, rest, then the fort in the afternoon

6:30 to 8:45 am: Leaving Jaipur

Early traffic is light, and the highway is clear. You will cover the first 135 km in about two hours.

If you have an evening in Jaipur before you go, a short Jaipur sightseeing taxi loop the day before lets you see the main sights without rushing the morning of departure.

Share your pickup point and a landmark with the driver the night before. Old city lanes can be narrow.

8:45 to 10:15 am: Ajmer

Ajmer is the first real stop. The dargah is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the country, and Ana Sagar Lake offers a calm spot for tea.

Give it between 45 and 90 minutes. A longer visit pushes the schedule into the afternoon heat, so decide upfront how much time you want here.

If you would like Pushkar as well, plan a night. A Jaipur Ajmer Pushkar tour can be extended toward Jodhpur with the same vehicle and driver.

For Pilgrims: Temples Along the Way

Many travellers on this road are going for darshan. Ajmer Sharif is the best known, and there are temples and shrines in the towns that follow.

If your family also wants temples in Jaipur before leaving, a short Jaipur darshan cab morning on the day before keeps the long drive clear. Shrines close for a midday break, so plan arrival times carefully.

Dress modestly and carry something to cover your head at dargahs. Remove footwear as required.

10:15 am to 12:45 pm: Beawar to Pali

This stretch is the quiet middle of the drive. Beawar is a textile town known for its kulfi, and Pali is a market town on the way.

Choose lunch carefully. A busy dhaba with a steady line of trucks and families is a safer bet than an empty place with a large sign.

Ask your driver where he eats. He knows which kitchens are fresh and which washrooms are clean.

12:45 to 1:30 pm: Entering Jodhpur

The last 70 km from Pali is simple, but the final few kilometres into the city can be slow. Jodhpur’s roads fill at lunchtime and again from late afternoon.

Share the hotel’s exact location. Many hotels near the fort and the clock tower sit in narrow lanes, and a car may need to stop at a drop point.

Plan to rest after arrival. A six-hour drive followed by a hot fort climb is a poor use of an afternoon.

Choosing the Right Departure Time

Leave early, between 6 and 7 am. You miss the worst heat, cover the first stretch quickly, and arrive with daylight left.

A departure after 10 am turns the day into a late arrival. In summer, the afternoon sun on the road is hard on drivers and vehicles.

In winter, fog can slow the early morning stretch near Ajmer. If fog is forecast, leave a little later, and keep the schedule loose.

One Way or Round Trip

This matters on every long outstation route. A one-way fare often carries part of the driver’s empty return. A round trip spreads the cost over both legs.

If you are continuing to Jaisalmer, Udaipur or flying out of Jodhpur, you only need one way. Ask whether the quote includes the return charge and how it is calculated.

If you will come back to Jaipur with the same driver, ask for both quotes and compare totals, not rates.

What Shapes the Fare

A 335 km route has more moving parts than a city ride. The fare is not just distance times a rate.

  • The base fare for the vehicle and the day or kilometre package.
  • Kilometres beyond the daily limit if you add detours.
  • Driver night charge, if you stay a night on the way.
  • Tolls, usually paid on actuals.
  • Parking at forts, temples and hotels.
  • The one-way or round trip choice.

Ask for the quote in writing, with the vehicle model and each extra listed. A single number with no breakdown often hides something.

Choosing the Vehicle

A sedan suits one to three people with light luggage. An SUV suits four to six, or anyone who wants more legroom on a long day.

For larger groups, a tempo traveller keeps everyone together. Check the air conditioning before you leave, since a weak AC feels much worse over six hours than on a short city ride.

Which City First: Jodhpur or Udaipur

Many travellers wonder how to order their loop. Jodhpur sits to the west and Udaipur to the south, and the two are about five to six hours apart.

If you are choosing between them, our post on Udaipur versus Jodhpur compares the forts, the food, the weather and the cost.

Making Jodhpur Part of a Longer Trip

Jodhpur works well as a middle stop. It is a natural pairing with Jaipur before it and Udaipur or Jaisalmer after it.

A balanced 5 nights 6 days Rajasthan tour links Jaipur, Ajmer, Pushkar, Udaipur and Jodhpur, with the drive times planned in.

For a longer circuit that adds the desert cities, a Rajasthan tour package 8 nights 9 days gives every city room to breathe.

Going On to Jaisalmer

After Jodhpur, the desert is the natural next step. Jaisalmer is about 285 km further west, a drive of five to six hours.

The Jaipur to Jaisalmer cab service route is often split with a night in Jodhpur, so neither day is too long.

If the desert is your goal, read Jaisalmer versus Bikaner first.

A proper Rajasthan desert safari works best in winter. Days are warm and nights are cold, so pack layers.

Flying Out of Jodhpur or Back Into Jaipur

Some travellers drive one way and fly home from Jodhpur. That saves the return drive. Others loop back to Jaipur and fly out from there.

If you return to Jaipur for a flight, book a Jaipur airport drop taxi for the final leg, and leave extra time for traffic near the airport.

Do not plan a same-day return drive and a flight on the same evening. Six hours on the road leaves little margin for a delay.

Season by Season

Winter, from November to February, is the most comfortable. It is also the busiest, so book early. Fog can slow early mornings in December and January.

Summer, from April to June, is hot, especially in the afternoon. Start before dawn, carry water, and make sure the AC works.

Monsoon, from July to September, brings heavy rain in places. Roads are slower and some stretches may see waterlogging. Add buffer time.

What Your Driver Watches For on This Road

The highway is wide, but a few things slow every driver down. Knowing them makes the pace feel less strange.

Trucks dominate the lanes, and they cluster near towns and toll plazas. Overtaking takes patience. Village crossings and bus stops appear suddenly, with people and cattle near the road. Speed breakers near towns are sometimes poorly marked, especially at night.

Roadworks come and go. A stretch that was clear last month may have a diversion today, so ask the driver what he saw this week.

Do not push him to hurry. A calm driver brings you in safely and often more quickly than a rushed one.

Fuel, Breakdown and Phone Signal

Fuel stations are plentiful along the highway, so a well-prepared vehicle should have no trouble. Ask your driver to fill up before the long stretch beyond Beawar.

Phone signal is mostly good, with occasional weak patches in the hills near Ajmer and Beawar. Download your map for offline use and save the operator’s number.

Ask what the plan is if the vehicle breaks down. A good operator can send a replacement or arrange a tow. Get this answer before you start, not on the roadside.

Travelling With Children or Elders

Six hours is long for children and tiring for elders. Plan a break every two hours, and keep water, snacks and a light blanket within reach.

Choose an SUV or a tall sedan with easy entry. Ask for working AC and clean seats. Avoid starting after noon, since late arrival after a hot day tires everyone.

If someone gets motion sickness, give them the front seat and keep windows slightly open. Carry a bag and some lemon.

A Two Day Version With a Night in Ajmer or Pushkar

If six hours in one go feels like too much, split it. The route has a natural halfway point.

Day Plan
Day 1 Leave Jaipur mid-morning, reach Ajmer by noon, visit the dargah and the lake, stay the night in Ajmer or Pushkar
Day 2 Leave after breakfast, reach Jodhpur by early afternoon, rest, then the fort or the market in the evening

This plan adds a hotel night and a driver night charge. It buys you a calmer pace and a proper visit to Ajmer. Many travellers find it a better trade than a single long day.

Your First Afternoon in Jodhpur

After the drive, keep the first hours simple. Check in, eat a proper lunch, and rest for an hour.

In the late afternoon, walk through the old city below the fort, or visit the clock tower market. The light is softer, and the heat has eased. Save the big fort visit for the next morning, when it is cooler and quieter.

Keep dinner flexible. Jodhpur has good rooftop restaurants with fort views, and a table near sunset is worth booking if you can.

Coming Back: Jodhpur to Jaipur

The return trip follows the same highway. The distance is the same, and the time is about the same.

Leave Jodhpur early. If you have a flight from Jaipur the same day, add a large buffer. A delay near Ajmer or in the city traffic can eat an hour.

If you are booking one way from Jodhpur, ask the same return-charge question. A quote that looks cheap may include no allowance for the vehicle’s journey back.

Tolls and FASTag on This Route

The highway has several toll plazas, and most are collected electronically with a FASTag on the vehicle. Queues can build on busy days, especially around long weekends and festivals.

Tolls are normally paid on actuals, on top of the base fare. Ask whether your quote includes them, and ask the driver to keep the receipts so you can check the total at the end.

Rates and rules change, so do not rely on a number you read last year. Your operator should state the current position in the quote.

Summer Driving on This Road

From April to June, the afternoon sun on the plains is fierce. Temperatures near Pali and Jodhpur often climb well above 40 degrees.

Start before 6 am, finish the long stretch by noon, and rest through the afternoon. Make sure the AC is serviced, and carry water. Tyres and engines work harder in heat, so ask when the vehicle was last checked.

Mistakes That Waste the Day

Leaving late. A 10 am start means a hot, tiring second half.

Adding too many stops. Three long stops turn six hours into nine.

Skipping the return-charge question on a one-way quote.

Not sharing the hotel’s exact location. Jodhpur’s old lanes are narrow.

Arranging a fort climb straight after arrival. Rest first.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

  • What is the total fare, and what does it include?
  • Is the quote one way or round trip?
  • Which route will the driver take?
  • Are tolls, parking and driver night charge included?
  • Can I get the driver’s name and number before pickup?
